Rabbit skin glue, rich in collagen and used for ancestral purposes, has various applications in artistic works, such as a pigment binder for tempera techniques, an adhesive in gilding projects, a substrate for preparing painting supports such as canvases, and as an adhesive and sealant on supports such as paper, cardboard, and other substrates. In traditional oil painting, rabbit skin glue is used to coat the canvas. This is necessary because linseed oil, which forms the base of most oil paints, contains linoleic acid that will destroy the canvas fibers over time. The primary purpose of rabbit skin glue is to stretch the canvas. Soak for a few hours before diluting in a water bath. Apply warm. Use within 48 hours. Add a preservative.
